How Much Does Athlete Training Cost?

When was the last time you considered training for your son or daughter -- how much online research did you do before your final decision? What kinds of trainers did you explore to help you make your decision? What were their specialties? What other content did you look into? Reviews? Costs? When did you decide to just buy your child their own equipment for them to learn and explore on their own?

When I was a teenager, I didn't know about sports performance training and neither did my parents. My parents knew I liked to workout so they furnished an at home gym for myself and I had full range. However, all I knew was how to train like a body builder and neither of us had any idea sports performance training was a thing that existed. And to me, I thought as long as I continuously got big and strong, I would be a better player on the field. My teammates certainly a noticed over time and that was all the feedback I needed at that time.

Now being in the field of sports performance and understanding what it truly entails, I've come to realize I barely scratched the surface in truly elevating my own athletic potential. In addition, I know that there are a ton of experienced professionals everywhere, like myself, readily available to help athletes level up.

I am an advocate for investing into proper trainer to support your health and performance goals. With that said, I want to share details that can support your decision making before you commit to a coach and program.

Now before we get into the numbers, let’s briefly talk about what sports performance coaches are, what they do and if this is right for you.

With technology becoming more advanced, science and evidence based programs are proving to track and produce results, as long as their is proper coaching.

HOW MUCH DOES TRAINING COST FOR ATHLETE TRAINING?

Let's get into the what you came here for now which is getting to know the cost of training.

Now that covered the basics of sports performance training, let's get into why you came here. How much will training cost?

When you search through Google, you will find that prices range from $20 for a one-time session to thousands of dollars for multiple-month programs. Prices vary significantly due to the personalized nature of training programs.

Here are the main factors that influence the cost of performance training:

  • Location: Corporate Gym vs. Private Gym/Trainer
  • Duration of Training
  • Program Length
  • Mode of Training: In-person, Virtual or Online

LOCATION: CORPORATE GYM VS. PRIVATE GYM/TRAINER

These are typically the two routes you can go through when looking for a coach or trainer for your son and/or daughter. Common corporate gyms that may come across are Planet Fitness, LifeTime Fitness, Retro Fitness or maybe Crunch Fitness. Of course there a ton of others that I may not have mentioned but it's a safe bet that you'll drive by these in your town. The beautiful and tricky part with corporate gyms is that they have a slew of trainers and coaches that have various specialties ranging from HIIT, yoga, general fitness training or kettlebell training. These are the just the tip of the iceberg and every corporate gym has different mixed bag of experienced trainers.

Now, if you're looking for a coach or a trainer to help your kid(s) get general fitness and learn more about their body, by all means check out your local gym. They will help with building a general routine, consistency and accountability. Although it could be at varying degrees because everyone has their own style and focuses. The rates typically are standardized based on the tier of the gym. If you're at a Planet Fitness where the focus is to provide a welcoming environment for all walks of life, training packages will be on the lower end. On the opposite end of the spectrum where you get a club and membership feel like a LifeTime Fitness, prices will reflect that. Either way in corporate gyms, it's typically a flat rate unless there is a promoted program for kids and athletes.

However, if the focus is to improve athletic development, definitely want to look into a private owned gym or a private coach. You're more likely to run into a coach with experience in studying and participating in athletics as opposed to a corporate gym. Of course, homework will still need to be done on your part as not all private gyms and coaches out there focus on sport’s performance. Your town may have a few options while others may require a bit of a commute.

There is typically more flexibility with pricing because on average there is separate pricing for adults and athletes (middle school through college). Private gyms, there's variability as they are tailoring to specific groups of people that are coming in.

DURATION OF TRAINING

Whether you're in a corporate gym or found a private trainer, you can find program options with variability in the duration. On average, you can expect 45-60 minutes to be the standard for individual training sessions. It's common to see that the length of a session will drive the cost of an individual session or training program. There are also cases where the rate could be the same whether you can train for 30 minutes or 60 minutes.

PROGRAM LENGTH

Aside from the cost of individual sessions, you will need to take into account the length of the program that your athlete will be enrolling in. Whether that be for a week, month, half year or a full year. And will it be once a week or multiple times a week. You can start to see that there are a few moving parts within the process of picking training programs. No matter how you cut it, training will be an investment.

MODE OF TRAINING: ONLINE, VIRTUAL, IN-PERSON

In-person training is of course a staple and even through the pandemic, having a trainer in person is still sought after. Training prices for in-person will vary from gym to gym and between private trainers as well.

Virtual has been taking the world by storm because of the pandemic. It was a less popular option prior to 2020, however, still was an option available to many athletes and adults. You won't really see too much difference in pricing from in-person and virtual training aside from the fact that you will be over Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp video. You will still get the verbal coaching and cues that you would get in person. Still get the same time for breaks.

Online is an option that is exploding more, just like virtual. It also has been around prior to covid and is growing in popularity. The convenience of downloading a program on your phone or laptop to workout on your on time. Either at home, at the park or a gym, online training is the best option for general guidance and flexibility over training. Due to the flexibility and less customized programs, you can find this option to be the most affordable.
